Search Term Development

Helpful Search Terms:

  • Assimilation:  "Assimilation is the process by which individuals of a foreign or minority culture enter the social positions of the standard or dominant culture in which they reside."  Assimmilation is a social process.
  • Acculturation:  Acculturation is "the process by which individuals of foreign or minority cultures learn the language, habits, and values of the standard or dominant culture in which they reside."  Acculturation is a cultural process.

Placing quotation marks around search terms tells the catalog, database, or search engine to search for the entered words in the order they appear.

  • Try searching for the assigned country’s nationality and the word “American” together such as "Afghan American" or "Chinese American."
  • Try broader terms just as "Hispanic American" or "Muslim American.

  • Try searches for a specific non-western religion and American.
