Purpose of the Church Guided Research Project

Instructions and resources for completing the country project for Introduction to the Purpose of the Church.

What's God Doing?

Before undertaking mission work in a country, it is helpful to know what missionaries or mission agencies and organizations are already working there and how their work is progressing.  Other missionaries, already working in a country, are wonderful sources of information about the country.

NOTE:  For this section if you cannot find the specified information on your country, select a neighboring country in the same geographical area.

In the charts linked below, answer the following questions using Mission Handbook 2010 (R 266.0216 M67 2010):

  • How many missionaries have been sent to your country?
  • How many missionaries have been sent from your country?
  • How many congregations (churches) are there in your country?

In the charts below, answer the following questions using Mission Handbook 2010 (R 266.0216 M67 2010):

  • What Christian evangelizing organizations are serving in your country?
  • How many people are serving from each organization in your country?

NOTE:  If there are many organizations serving in your country, a photocopy of the corresponding pages from Mission Handbook is acceptable.

List between 5 to 10 missionaries from the Christian Church/Church of Christ or your own faith heritage who are serving in your country including names and field addresses.  If there are no missionaries at all in your country, list missionaries from a country bordering yours or in the same geographical area.

Use the Missionary Directory (R266.03 M678) to find information on Christian Church/Church of Christ missionaries.

  • At the back of the Missionary Directory is a list of Missionaries by Location.
  • After locating a missionary, look up the missionary's name and address in the main Missionary Directory which is an alphabetical listing of all missionaries included.

Obtain a RECENT newsletter (within the last year) from a missionary in your country.

  • Newsletters are available on the second floor of the library in the Christian Education Room.
  • In addition, Mr. Nichols has many newsletters available as well.
  • You may find the misssionary you selected has online newsletters that may be accessible.

Make a photocopy or print out the newsletter to include in your project.
Write a summary no more than two paragraphs of the newsletter contents including such items as new ministries, number of contacts, and other interesting information.
