Purpose of the Church Guided Research Project

Instructions and resources for completing the country project for Introduction to the Purpose of the Church.

World News

In order to gain increased awareness of what is going on in the world outside of the United States of America and to begin the process of selecting a country, complete the following news assignment.  For this section, look for news information and news articles on any country outside of the U.S.  

For each of the news sources described in the tabs above, include the following information in the chart provided:

  • Name of the news source
  • Date of publication and time if appropriate
  • Topic of the lead story
  • Total number of international stories covered and the number of countries mentioned
  •  Include your thoughts on specific actions the church should take to help in the situation or how individual Christians should respond.

Watch a television news program such as the evening world news at 5:30 p.m. on one of the major TV networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) or the world news on CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, or PBS.

Browse through a recent issue (within the last month) of Time.  This resource is available on the Jessie C. Eury Library Reference Room Current Journal Shelves.  Time is also available at most public and academic libraries.

Browse through a recent (within the last week) issue of a local daily newspaper such as The State-Journal Register, The Pantagraph, or The Journal Star. These newspapers may be accessed at Lincoln Public Library or Lincoln College's McKinstry Library.  The online version may be accessed via the links below.

Browse through a recent (within the last week) issue of a national daily newspaper such as USA Today, Chicago Tribune, or Wall Street Journal. These newspapers are available at the Lincoln Public Library or Lincoln College's McKinstry Library.  The online version of these newspapers, as well as the New York Times may be accessed via the links below. Keep in mind that for this assignment viewing only the headlines is sufficient.

Browse an internet news site such as those listed below or another of your choice.

Using the chart provided below, state which sources you would recommend, or not recommend, Christians use to stay informed on international issues and why.
